In a fire that broke out at the Uday Shivanand Covid-19 hospital at Rajkot in Gujarat, five people died and one person was seriously injured. All the elderly victims aged between 60 to 70 years was undergoing treatment at the hospital when the fire broke out on Friday midnight at around 1 am. According to Rajkot municipal commissioner Udit Agarwal three people died on the spot, two others succumbed to their injuries while being treated for burns.

“Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to a hospital fire in Rajkot. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate tragedy. Praying for a quick recovery of the injured. The administration is ensuring all possible assistance to those affected: PM”, tweeted Prime Minister’s Office India.

According to reports, the ICU of the three-floored hospital was situated in the first floor. A total of 33 people were admitted in the hospital of various age groups. Though the fire is believed to have broken out due to short circuit, state government under chief minister Vijay Rupani has ordered for a probe into the incident.

In August this year, eight Covid-19 patients were charred to death after a similar fire broke out at the top floor of a Covid hospital in Ahmedabad.
