Universal ID for people with disabilities to be introduced

The government of India will come out with a universal ID that will be valid across the country for persons with disability. This will enable them to avail the benefit of various schemes and reservations without difficulty. The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar said that the government is also framing a new act that will include another 12 types of physical disabilities. The existing act only recognises seven disabilities. He also said that Rs 218 crore had been allotted to the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyaan to make facilities accessible for the challenged. A programme has also been started to facilitate cochlear implants for children with speech and hearing impairments.
