Not enough eye surgeons in India to treat diabetic retinopathy

The number of people with diabetes is growing in large numbers in India. Diabetic retinal blindness is emerging as a major cause for irreversible blindness.

At the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, about 40 patients turn up every week with diabetic retinopathy. However, there are not enough eye surgeons in India to deal with the condition.

One out of every five people with diabetes in India has some degree of diabetic retinopathy and an estimated 6 million people have a severe form of the condition. There are also more cases of children diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy.
