IIT Madras to develop emergency communication system

A team of engineers from IIT Madras is developing a low-cost communication system that can be used during disasters.

Natural disasters like storms, floods, earthquakes disrupt the communication system and make rescue work difficult. IIT Madras is working on a system that will allow rescue workers to communicate with a locally established center.

These centers will be connected to the National Disaster Management Agency in Delhi. The system will be compatible with a basic mobile phone.

The system will be compact and easily movable based on Wi-Fi and a satellite link.
