Quota for people with disabilities in colleges to be considered

The government is considering a proposal to allow people with disabilities to avail 5% reservation in higher education institutions from the next academic session.

According to the recently notified Act, specially-abled persons with benchmark disability between the age group of 6 and 18 years will also have the right to free education.

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill also provides for raising reservation in government jobs for persons with benchmark disabilities from 3 to 4%

The government has increased the types of disabilities from the existing seven to 21.
