Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who was also a senior BJP leader, passed away on Saturday. He was cremated on Sunday with full state honours at the Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi. There was a huge line of party workers, BJP leaders and members from other political parties who lined up to pay their last respects for the former leader. 66 year old Jaitley, who was loved across the political spectrum, was one of the most prominent BJP leaders.
His mortal remains were kept inside the BJP headquarters on Sunday morning before being taken to the cremation ground. BJP leaders Amit Shah, Piyush Goyal, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Congress President Sonia Gandhi were amongst the prominent leaders who paid their homages to Jaitley.
"Just paid my last tearful tribute to #ArunJaitley ji at BJP headquarter", tweeted Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently attending the G7 Summit at France, had offered to come back to attend Jaitley's funeral, but his family dissuaded him.
Jaitley was admitted at AIIMS in New Delhi since the past two weeks. Doctors had confirmed that his health was deteriorating. Apart from politicians, many celebrities also took to social media to express their condolences over Jaitley's death.
"Shocked & saddened to hear about the passing away of Shri Arun Jaitley ji. He was genuinely a good person, always willing to help others. He took out his precious time back in 2006 when my father passed away to come to my home & pay his condolences. May his soul rest in peace", tweeted Indian Cricket Team Captain Virat Kohli.
"It's raining here at the Nigambodh Ghat where @arunjaitley's funeral procession is taking place. It's said if it rains in one's last rites, one goes straight to heaven. Had rained during Atal Vajpayee's final rites as well", tweeted Journalist SaahilMurli Menghani.
