Chennai NGO Vidya Sagar is holding a mela at its Kotturpuram premises on 22 and 23 December. On sale will be handicrafts and other items made by over 20 NGOs and schools for disabled children. This is an annual initiative started by Vidya Sagar some years ago and seeks to provide a platform for products made by disabled people.
Amazing products made by disabled people
The mela is called Namba Pasanga Angadi and on display will be varied and creative items like rugs, paper bags and stoles made by people with multiple disabilities.
We even have NGOs and people from remote areas displaying their products. Visitors also get a chance to try their hand at weaving, block printing, thread painting and marbling. They can also watch disabled youth making these products. – Radha Ramesh, Director, Vidya Sagar
Means to showcase talents of disabled people
Sales from the mela will go to the participating NGOs. The meal draws a good response every time and this year too organisers are expecting well over 1,000 visitors. “We see this as a platform for disabled people to show their creativity and sell their products”, says Amridharaj, who is the coordinator. “It also gives them a chance to meet with non-disabled people”.
So, do make time and visit the mela on 22 & 23 December from 9.30 AM to 5.30 PM. If you are looking for some meaningful gifts this holiday season, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
