In what is an unprecedented turn of events in Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state early morning yesterday.

Ajit Pawar, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was also sworn as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The events created a buzz across the country as NCP has been in talks with Shiv Sena about forming a coalition government in the state.

Shiv Sena which was all set to form a government with the help of NCP and Congress criticized the move made by BJP. Shiv Sena has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court against Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The party has demanded that the actions taken by Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari should be declared illegal.

Sharad Pawar, chief of NCP and uncle of Ajit Pawar issued a statement that it was Ajit’s personal decision to support BJP and that his party didn’t endorse or support it.

Ajit was later removed as the NCP legislative party leader for going against the party’s wishes and joining hands with the BJP.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Congratulations to @Dev_Fadnavis Ji and @AjitPawarSpeaks Ji on taking oath as the CM and Deputy CM of Maharashtra respectively. I am confident they will work diligently for the bright future of Maharashtra.”

As per reports, Devendra Fadnavis has to prove his majority in the assembly by 30 November.

Defense minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Fadnavis and tweeted,” Congratulations to Shri @Dev_Fadnavis and Shri Ajit Pawar on taking oath as the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. I am extremely confident that they will jointly work for the progress and prosperity of the state.”
