ED to arrest former finance minister

A special CBI court has given the permission to the Enforcement Directorate-ED to arrest former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in INX Media case.
The court gave the option to ED to either interrogate Chidambaram first at the court premises for half an hour and then move application for his custody or to send him to Tihar jail and arrest him from there.
The court asked the agency to avoid arresting the former Minister in public view. The court said, “It’s not in the dignity of this person that you interrogate and arrest him here in public view.”
As per reports, ED will interrogate Chidambaram in Tihar jail today and an arrest may follow if necessary.
Chidambaram has been lodged in Tihar jail since 5 September after he was arrested by the CBI on 21 August in the INX Media case.
The Enforcement Directorate had requested the court for custodial interrogation of Chidambaram in its ongoing investigation into a money-laundering case related to INX Media.
Chidambaram has been accused of irregularities in the FIPB clearance that was granted to the INX Media group and allowed them to receive overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007. Chidambaram was the finance minister of the country at that time. His son Karti P Chidambaram is also accused of receiving bribe in the case.
The FIR in the case was filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in May 2017 and later the Enforcement Directorate(ED) also lodged a money laundering case in this regard.
Social media users responded to the news of Chidambaram’s potential arrest by ED.
Prasad tweeted,”#PChidambaram All set and done let bjp led central govt go all out and clean up the mess created for decades by Congressman cum Lawyers politicians, for all those saying vendetta so be it, all those having huge assets all over the world on corrupt practices should pay for it.”
