Assembly elections were held yesterday for 288 constituencies in Maharashtra and 90 constituencies in Haryana.

The main contest is between two parties BJP and Congress in both states where BJP is already in power. The voter turnout was 63% in Maharashtra and 61% in Haryana.

Aamir Khan, Lara Dutta, Dia Mirza, Gulzar, Riteish Deshmukh, Salman Khan were among some of the Bollywood celebrities who cast their votes in Maharashtra.

According to some exit polls Bhartiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance is expected to retain its power in Maharashtra with victory at around 200 seats in the 288-member state assembly.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar rode a bicycle to the polling booth to cast his vote and later said, “Opposition parties including Congress have already lost and have left the battleground, their tall claims have no value.”

While Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala cast his vote in Kaithal, Haryana and said, “I think that development will win and Gundaraj will end…The polls will be decided by the people and not BJP. Ego is everyone’s enemy and their ego will be busted too.”

Apart from the assembly elections, bypolls were also held for 51 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha constituencies spread across 18 states.
