Leaders of farmer unions protesting against the Centre’s new farm laws held a one-day hunger strike on Monday. Demonstrations were also held in many parts of the country. The hunger strike was held between 8 am to 5 pm on and is part of the farmers’ plan to intensify their agitation.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also announced that he would hold a day-long fast on Monday and appealed to the central government scarp the law.

Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni called for demonstrations at all district headquarters in India.

Union Minister Kailash Choudhary has said that the government will soon decide a date for the next meeting and expressed confidence that the issues will be resolved this time.

Five rounds of talks have failed to end the stalemate and the sixth was cancelled on 3 December. The sixth round of talks did not take place after farmer leaders rejected the government’s draft proposal to amend certain provisions of the farm laws and declined to participate in the meeting.

The government has made it clear that it is ready for discussion anytime. But the farmer unions have said they would come for talks only if the laws are repealed.
