‘Gully Boy’ out of Oscars 2020

Zoya Akhtar’s directorial venture Gully Boy was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2019. The movie was India’s official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt received a lot of appreciation. But unfortunately, the movie did not make it to the final listed selections for Oscars. ‘Gully Boy’ has been dropped and is no longer part of the race. One of the first people to take a dig at the makers of ‘Gully Boy’ was actress Kangana Ranaut’s sister Rangoli Chandel.
This film is based on Hollywood film 8 Mile, yahan ke movie mafia chatukar critics ke chaatne se kya hota hai, it’s not original content like Uri and Manikarnika, why Hollywood will give award to a film which is copied from their film?- Rangoli Chandel.
‘Gully Boy’ showed on-screen the life of Mumbai based street rappers Divine and Naezy. The movie took audience to the famous Dharavi slums of Mumbai where the rappers grew up to become famous.
The Oscars will be held at Los Angeles on 9 February. Many social media users found this a good decision. Apparently, because ‘Gully Boy’ was not up to the Oscar standards. “#Gullyboy is a good film, but not Oscar-worthy and the jury who sent it as India’s official entry knew it. And now, they will say we don’t care about Oscars, then why send entries at all. Send films like #Tumbadd and you will see the diff. Stop playing the prejudice card”, tweeted journalist Agamoni Ghosh.
