Jyotiraditya Scindia appeals to Sonia Gandhi
September 5, 2019
Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, who has set his sights on becoming chief of the party in Madhya Pradesh by replacing current chief Kamal Nath has said that party chief Sonia Gandhi would take a final call on the matter.
Speaking to a newspaper, he said,
Soniaji will take a call on MP Congress Chief. I had a talk with her. High command will take the decision, which would be accepted. - Jyotiraditya Scindia, Congress leader
Sonia Gandhi took over as interim president in August, after a three-month crisis following Rahul Gandhi's resignation from the party chief's post. The tussle over the Madhya Pradesh party chief's post has been brewing for months after he openly supported the Narendra Modi government's move on Jammu and Kashmir.
Scindia, who is close to Rahul Gandhi, has been waiting for a key post since the Congress won the assembly elections last year. He was not made chief minister, or the deputy or the party chief and Kamal Nath continued to head both the government and the party. He has been angling for the party's top job.
He has started pushing for the post again after Rahul Gandhi made his disappointment with Kamal Nath and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot clear for focussing on their sons' elections.
Kamal Nath has offered to step down from the party post and cooperate with anyone should the party name a new chief in the state. Scindia's supporters have put up posters and hoardings showing their support for him.
