Law student arrested in Chinmayanand extortion case

September 26, 2019

The law student from Uttar Pradesh who had accused BJP senior leader Chinmayanand of rape has been arrested in an extortion case.

A Special Investigating Team-SIT arrested the woman based on a case filed by Chinmayanand claiming that she was trying to extort money from him. She was earlier denied an anticipatory bail by a Division Bench of the Allahabad High Court and the District and session's court was to hear her plea today.

She had said, "I do not know if the people who helped me escape from Chinmayanand were using me. I have nothing to do with the extortion case. I think all this drama is being done to dilute my charges of rape."

The law student from Shahjahanpur had claimed that she had been repeatedly abused and blackmailed by Chinmayanand, who runs several ashrams and educational institutions. She had also shared some evidence with the SIT, which was formed by the order of Supreme Court to inquire into allegations made by the student.

72-year-old BJP leader Chinmayanand was arrested last week in the rape case.

During interrogation Chinmayanand confessed about having called the law student for "massages" and said that he was ashamed of his act.

As per reports, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had earlier booked three friends of the law student in connection to a video clip in which they were purportedly discussing the extortion.

The woman was taken for a medical examination by the UP police and was then arrested. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vineet Kumar has sent her to 14 days judicial custody.

The latest development in the case has created a buzz on social media and many have condemned the arrest.

Akansha Thakur tweeted," Not too surprised by this step of @Uppolice and @myogiadityanath, what else you can expect from a government like this. "

"The girl who alleged rape by #Chinmayanand was taken into custody by #UP #Police on charges of extortion and blackmailing . I don't expect anything better from #YogiAdityanath But the silence of my upper-caste friends who were in the streets for #Nirbhaya is scarier," tweeted Manishbpl
