Mobile app for 2021 India census

September 24, 2019

Home Minister Amit Shah has said that for the national census in the year 2021, a mobile application will be used to collect data.

"It will be a transformation from paper census to digital census," Shah said.

The census which is to be held in February 2021 will be the first one in history of census in India that will use a mobile app to gather information. A census is a survey for collection of information related to the population of a country.

Home Minister Amit Shah also said that the union government will be spending an amount of ₹12,000 crore on the 2021 census and also the preparation of the National Population Register-NPR.

The census will be carried out in 16 languages and the mobile app is under development currently.

Shah also spoke about the idea of a single identity card that can be used in place of various separate documents.

"Why can't we have just one card for all utilities like Aadhaar, passport, bank account, driving licence, voter card? There should be a system that all data should be put together in a single card. This is a potential. That is why digital census is very important," said Amit Shah.

Official twitter account of Census of India, 2021 tweeted," For the first time in the history of #Census in #India , data is proposed to be collected through a Mobile App for #Census2021.To ensure reliability of the nascent system & an overview of possible hitches, a Pre-test is being carried out across the country.
