Mobile towers damaged in Punjab amidst farmers’ anger

With farmers protesting against the three farm bills, there has been widespread fury and anger against big Indian business houses, mainly Reliance whom farmers claim are benefitting the most from farm laws. More than 1500 mobile towers of Jio were destroyed in Punjab disrupting telecom services. Farmers who are protesting against the laws allegedly put them out of action.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has given a stern warning against such acts. He has also asked the police to take action against culprits. Mobile towers faced heavy damage including power disruption and theft of generator.
Last month, farmers requested all those who support them to boycott Reliance products including their supermarkets and malls. In Jalandhar, Jio’s fibre cable were burnt. Videos of Jio staffs being threatened were circulated on social media. No action were taken against the perpetrators. Singh who was also a supporter of the farmers said that no such vandalising acts can be tolerated by the state government.
