Aarey cleared for Metro project

Deforestation has affected millions of humans, wildlife and animals across the world. Cutting down trees for concrete buildings and other projects has become very common. For last two years, environmentalists and NGO's have been working hand in hand to stop officials from cutting down trees at the Aarey forest. In a shocking statement, the Mumbai High Court declared that Aarey is not a forest which also means giving a go ahead for the cutting down of over 2600 trees.

With the high court coming up with a statement, trees will be cut for creating a metro car shed, a project of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC). All the four petitions that challenged this was cancelled by the high court. Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice Bharati Dangre said that the issue is already pending with the Supreme Court of India and National Green Tribunal as well.

MMRC's move to cut down trees had created quite a stir amongst environmentalists who decided to challenge the move. Aarey forest is known as the green lung of Mumbai city. "Truely disappointed by the decision of the Bombay High Court, firstly how can aarey not be a forest second of all if so many rules have been imposed on not cutting the trees then doesn't the @mybmc follow it @Dev_Fadnavis you are pathetic as well, development harming environment", tweeted Rylan Aranha.
