Over 40 feared dead in boat accident

A boat carrying 63 people in the East Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh capsized yesterday afternoon. Around 46 people are feared dead while several remain missing.

National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force personnel are carrying out the search operations. The river Godavari was flowing at the danger mark at the time of the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted," Extremely pained by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Rescue operations are currently underway at the site of the tragedy."

As per reports, the boat carried mostly tourists and had started off for the Papikondalu hill range from Gandi Pochamma Temple near Devipatnam.

The place is said to be a popular tourist destination.

President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, " Saddened to hear of capsizing of the boat in the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh. Thoughts and prayers with the bereaved families. Local authorities are undertaking rescue and relief efforts #PresidentKovind"

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced a compensation of 10 lakh each to the family of those killed.
