PAN-Aadhar link date extended

The last date for linking PAN with the Aadhaar number has been extended as per a government notification issued yesterday.
The previous deadline set for 30 September has now been extended to 31 December 2019.
Income Tax India’s official account tweeted,” @IncomeTaxIndia On consideration of representations recd from across the country,CBDT has decided to extend the due date for filing of ITRs & Tax Audit Reports from 30th Sep,2019 to 31st of Oct,2019 in respect of persons whose accounts are required to be audited.Formal Notification will follow.”
The linkage of the two documents is mandatory for filing Income tax returns and in the 2019 Budget, the rule regarding the consequences of not linking PAN with Aadhaar was revised.
As per the rule if a PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by the extended deadline, then as per current laws the PAN will become inoperative. However, the government is yet to notify the consequences of an ‘inoperative’ PAN.
According to the government data around two crore people in India are yet to link their PAN with the Aadhaar and that is why the government has extended the date a seventh time.
As per a 2018 ruling of the Supreme Court biometric ID or Aadhar is to remain mandatory for the filing of Income Tax returns and allotment of PAN.
The new announcement has had mixed reactions from social media users.
Kumar tweeted, “Drama by govt. Pan number linked to bank accounts already. No account possible without Adhar number . Then why can’t govt automatically link pan with Adhar ?”
