As protests by farmers intensifies in Delhi and its borders, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Friday stating that the they must be removed soon because they are blocking emergency medical services. Farmers who have thronged the national capital in thousands from various parts of India are adamant that protests will not end unless central government withdraws the three farm bills.

Though farmers were allowed entry to Delhi to hold peaceful protests last week, many were brutally beaten by Delhi police who stated safety of residents during Covid pandemic as one of the reasons for denying entry.

Talks with union ministers and farmer group representatives that were held around two to three times over past one week did not yield any results with government not ready to amend laws.

The current protests are one of the biggest farmer protests India has witnessed post-independence. The bill that was passed in the parliament in September was not welcomed by farmers who started protesting from then on. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is amongst those who came forward to support the farmer protests.
