The Ernakulam Autism Club is all set to introduce calendars for the upcoming year 2020. Each page will showcase a painting or poem of a youngster with autism. This is their second year of making these calendars after getting a lot of good responses for their last year’s work. The team at Autism Club is all set to launch it by end of the year.

Youngsters with autism have proved their inimitable skills, especially in arts and crafts. The Ernakulam Autism Club (EAC), an organisation that works towards empowering children and youngsters under the spectrum is all set to launch their calendar for the year 2020 showcasing paintings and poems of youngsters with autism. The team has prepared their first draft and is gearing up to launch it by the end of this year.

The team at EAC first created these calendars last year. They got a huge response after which the team wanted to take it forward and introduce it this year as well. From private parties to corporate companies and government organisations, their long list of clientele is extremely happy with the calendar. Each page showcases either a poem or art work of a youngster with autism.

Biju Issac, Secretary, EAC, says that a page from each month showcases the outstanding abilities of people under the spectrum.

Last year, we carried a painting and a poem together in one page and that was not effective because the poem often goes unnoticed. So we decided to carry them each in separate pages for our upcoming edition. We are doing this project so that the society becomes aware of the capabilities of a person who has autism-Biju Issac, Secretary, EAC.

Last year, the calendar got orders from across the globe and so was the praises! The team is open to accepting more entries for poems and paintings of those who wants to showcase their talent on a global platform. “The kids are also enjoying this process. They know that their work is being celebrated and that increases their confidence and self-esteem. Since the photo of the artist or poet is published along with their work, they are super excited”, says Biju.

One of their annual activities, EAC is looking forward for the success of this one. Each calendar will be priced at Rs 200. All the amount will go towards empowerment and other skill developmental activities of people with autism. “We do not want sympathy. We can assure good quality for the calendars and each work is unique. We do not want to compromise on the quality because these calendars have to travel across the globe”, adds Biju.

17 year old Sherin, who is under the autism spectrum, is an author and poet who has published her own books. Sherin’s mother Sangeetha John says that her daughter was thrilled to have her works in last year’s calendar. Three of her poems were published which received a lot of applause. “Writing is like breathing to Sherin and her communication is based on writing. So even if she is unwell she wants to write. She was excited that three of her works were published last year. The best part about this calendar is that it travels to places and exposes the talents of young individuals”, says Sangeetha.
