The citizenship amendment bill has created widespread protests across India. On Sunday, students from Jamia Milia University in Delhi were attacked by police. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi tweeted that oppressing students were a cowardly act of the Modi government. She further added that the central government feared voices of the people. That is why they have been trying different ways to oppress the students. On Monday evening, Priyanka and other Congress workers led a silent protest outside the India Gate against the injustice shown at students at Jamia Milia.

The police are entering universities and beating up students. The BJP government is oppressing students and journalists in places like Northeast, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. They should be actually listening to voices of people. This is a coward government. It wants to oppress the youth through dictatorship. The government is scared of the voice of the public- Priyanka Gandhi, Congress General Secretary.

Many students were injured in the attacks at Jamia Milia and were forced to leave their hostels and return back home. Those who were arrested were released on Monday morning. Many vehicles were torched. Both policemen and students suffered injuries in the attack

Opposition party leaders pointed out the inefficiency of central government in curbing the situation. The protests has spread to Aligarh University and many other colleges across India. “This govt is coward: Priyanka Gandhi @priyankagandhi thrashes @narendramodi govt of being cowardly as it feared to hear voice of people & is making its presence felt through oppression on students & journalists PM must listen to youth & not try to dictate them on improper terms”, tweeted Karnataka Congress.
