When you have a child with autism, there can be many things that worry you. But by following some simple tips, you can support your child.

When a child is diagnosed with autism, parents are worried about what to do next or how to support them. Being diagnosed with a disability is never easy. But there are many ways to support children and adults under the autism spectrum disorder. Today, technology has opened doors of opportunities to enable kids with disabilities to become independent and self-reliant. Parents must make use of all the available resources to ensure that their child gets the best facilities.

No matter how exhausted you are, take your child out to the community. Try different things that will set them in good stead for the future. You never know what your kid is going to respond to. Give it an honest try before you realise if it’s a hit or miss. This includes diet and medicines. Educate your friends and family about autism so that they can also include your child. Do not get overstressed. Talk to other parents and get to know them. – Nayan Kumar Padhi, Founder, Aawam Parent Support Group

Check out some tips to support kids with autism

Identify strengths, work on weaknesses– Every child is gifted with some talent. Hence, it is important to find out their strengths and weaknesses. Your child might be good at arts, crafts or music. Try and help them develop their skills. In future, they might even be able to make a living out of their talent which will help them to become independent.

Stick to a schedule– For children with autism, sticking to a schedule is very important. For example, a morning routine of going to school must be the same every day. They will get used to it. It makes them comfortable, happy and peaceful. Do not disrupt this routine. If you want to change, prepare your child in advance.

Reward good behaviour– Every child loves gifts. Rewarding the child when they do something good will help them. It will help to boost their self-esteem and confidence. Praise them when they do something good. You do not have to buy expensive gifts. A chocolate or even a small toy will make them happy.

Join parent support groups– One of the best things about social media is that people are able to connect easily. Information can be shared and analysed. There are many parents support groups on social media. If you are a parent who has a child with autism, try and join one. You can find people like you who can share and exchange information. You will also know what is best for your child.

“Focus on the positives and take your child along for everyday activities. Stay consistent. Praise and encourage them whenever you get a chance. When you praise them, it makes them feel good”, says Grace Santosh who has a son with autism.
