Srinagar records coldest night

Srinagar is one of the coldest cities in India. On 24 December night, the city recorded coldest night of this year. According to weather reports, the city recorded minus four degrees. Temperatures in Ladakh and across Jammu and Kashmir remained cold. It even came to a freezing point. Srinagar had earlier recorded lowest temperature on 8 December. Pahalgam in South Kashmir was recorded coldest in the area. “Very cold conditions are likely to prevail over the hills for consecutive days ahead. Temperatures are likely to remain very low. Already sub-zero temperatures are being recorded at multiple places in #HimachalPradesh, #JammuandKashmir and #Uttarakhand”, tweeted Skymet Weather.

Kashmir is now going through the Chillai Kalan period when extreme weather conditions prevail. Most of the places will experience heavy snowfall and cold weather. The period is expected to end by 31 December.

Normal life was disrupted due to snowfall. Water pipelines froze across Srinagar affecting water supply as well. “Kashmir reels under intense cold, Srinagar records coldest night of season”, tweeted Carol Anne Grayson.

Some of the other areas that were affected were Gulmarg, Kokernag town, Leh, Drass and Quazigund. Weather forecasters have predicted dry weather in days to come.
