Sushma Swaraj cremated with full state honours

India's former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who passed away on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest at AIIMS hospital, was cremated with full state honours at Lodhi Road crematorium on Wednesday evening. Her daughter Bansuri Swaraj performed the last rites. Sushma's husband Swaraj Kaushal and daughter broke down in tears when officials wrapped Sushma's mortal remains in tricolour. They paid salute as state honours were accorded to Sushma. Renowned personalities from film, sports and politics paid their respects to India's most beloved leader.

Deeply saddened to hear about the passing away of Sushma Swaraj Ji. May her soul rest in peace. She was an icon of women empowerment and the one who cared for citizens from all corners of the world-Sachin Tendulkar, Former Indian Cricket Player.

Swaraj's mortal remains were initially kept at her residence, and later taken to BJP headquarters by around 11 am on Wednesday for people to pay final respects. Many renowned personalities attended Sushma's last rites, including India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and former BJP leader LK Advani.President of India Ramnath Kovind also paid his respects to Sushma Swaraj.

"The nation has lost a genial and giant personality who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people. She will always be remembered for her service to the nation, statesmanship, work ethic and affable charisma", tweeted Ramnath Kovind, President of India.

"Paid my last respects to Smt. #SushmaSwaraj ji. A day of many memories, including of a special Minister-Secretary partnership of which we were both proud. Will miss her humour and affection", tweeted Dr S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India.

Sushma Swaraj was one of the most respected and loved politicians in India. Her dignified attitude and calm composure in handling situations was looked up by many people from across politics. Thousands of people came to pay last respects to their favourite leader. Tributes poured in from across the world for Sushma Swaraj who represented India at various international platforms.
