Delhi is now gripped by the worst pollution crisis. On Monday, the Supreme Court of India, while taking up a report from the Environment Pollution Control Authority, criticised both central and state governments. The top court pointed out that both state and central governments are passing the buck owing to which the people are suffering. This cannot happen in a civilised country where people are now not safe inside their own homes. The bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said that quick action must be taken against this. The court asked the governments whether people can survive in this atmosphere and pointed out that the situation is atrocious.

Supreme Court on air pollution:Justice Arun Mishra says, ‘cars create less pollution. What are you (Delhi) getting from this Odd-Even?’ #OddEven is just a tool to do scam in the name of hiring private busses. Corruption in free bus ride for women also through private operators-Prashant Patel Umravat, Lawyer and Public Speaker.

One of the biggest reasons for rising pollution levels in Delhi in the last ten days was due to stubble burning by farmers in nearby Punjab and Haryana. The situation became worse after Diwali celebrations and bursting of firecrackers.

In spite of the Environment pollution control board asking the state governments to stop stubble burning, nothing substantial was done. Supreme Court had banned crackers and ordered that only green crackers could be used. Even that law was broke. Now, people in Delhi and nearby areas are struggling to breathe clean air. Schools and colleges will remain shut till Tuesday. All construction works in the city have also been stopped. “17,925 sq kms of land is ON FIRE in Punjab & Haryana. TWELVE TIMES the size of Delhi [1481 sq km]. Stubble-burning would NEVER be banned because farmers are a vote-bank for the Chief Ministers . But why doesn’t the Supreme Court ban it? Do Chief Justices, too, have a vote-bank?”, tweeted Author Anand Ranganathan.
