Trump offers Kashmir mediation for third time

September 25, 2019

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently at the United States of America (USA) to attend the Howdy Modi event. The mega event witnessed thousands of people gathering to witness Modi. Amongst them was American President Donald Trump as well. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is also in the United States and met with Trump on Monday. The American President offered a mediation in the Kashmir issue for the third time. He said that if both Modi and Khan are ready, he is willing and able for a mediation.

In a media exchange w/Imran Khan, Trump: -Says he respects and trusts Khan -Claims Iran is a bigger source of terror than Pakistan -Offers, again, to mediate Kashmir dispute if India/Pak ask him to Should this be surprising, especially after yesterday's love-in w/Modi? Nope-Michael Kugelman, Deputy Director, Asia Program.

A few weeks back, Trump said that India had requested him to become the mediator, but the Indian government denied reports. Moreover, India has constantly rejected Trump's interference in the matter stating that Kashmir was an internal issue which did not need any international interfering.

Trump had earlier taken a dig at Pakistan saying that perpetrators of both 26/11 and 9/11 are from their soil. But he also vowed to protect people from Islam terrorism which is rapidly rising across the world. "Trump has, knowingly or unknowingly, waded into the middle of the Kashmir issue. The tensions were on display when he met Pakistan's Prime Minister today, a day after a Houston event where India's PM held Trump up as a de facto ally:"", tweeted White House reporter Josh Wingrove.
