Unnao Case Updates

Three days back, a 23 year old rape survivor from Unnao was burnt alive by accused in the case. The girl was on her way to the court on hearing of the case when she was attacked. She was later air lifted to a hospital in New Delhi. But succumbed to her injuries on Friday night. Post mortem of the girl revealed that she died of extensive burn injuries. The incident had sparked outrage across the country. Yogi Adityanath’s government was heavily criticised for not taking necessary action against accused. The girl’s body was brought to her village on Friday night itself. Hundreds of people gathered around the area.
The heart of this family has died. Many Qs: “When she was gangraped over a year ago, why did UP police not file an FIR? When she went to the court for its intervention and single-handedly got an arrest order, why did police arrest only one of two accused?- Karuna Nundy, Lawyer, Supreme Court of India.
The Uttar Pradesh government had announced Rs 25 lakh as compensation for the victim’s family. But opposition parties are demanding the amount to be increased to Rs 50 lakh. Meanwhile, the family demanded that the accused must be chased and killed like the Hyderabad incident.
Protests against government inaction happened across India. Water cannons were used against protestors in Delhi. A candle light march was held from Raj Ghat to India Gate. “Every person I know has been outraged/heart broken at Telangana, Unnao &Chitrakoot cases. Not one person asked the names of monsters. I still don’t know the names of any of the perpetrators. I don’t care to know. Why do responsible people play politics over such issues?”, tweeted Political Commentator Sunanda Vasisht.
