Amazon Customer Care Executive Amit Dua looks to excel at the workplace every day

Amazon believes everyone has a unique skill set and people with diverse abilities bring diverse strengths to the workplace. This includes people with disabilities as well. A Customer Care Executive at Amazon, Amit Dua handles hundreds of calls every day. He handles every customer with patience and empathy.

Amit, who comes from a wealthy background in Gurugram, led a pampered childhood. Like most children his age, he was and about cricket and enjoyed hanging out with his friends.

Pushed out of a moving train

Life took an abrupt turn in 2015 when Amit was accidentally pushed out of a moving train. Fortunately, he got help immediately. Two Indian Army jawans rushed him to a hospital where he was in coma for three days.

Amit’s right hand had to be amputated as he had damaged his elbow bone during the fall. He had also been badly injured in the hip bone. He developed a foot drop condition which makes it hard for him to walk easily. Amit must lift his leg while walking.

For someone who was used to a life of comfort and ease, this sudden change of situation was hard to handle. Amit struggled to live with the disability, both physically and mentally. He was on bed rest for eight months after which he got implants to support his leg and attach it back to his hip joint.

Perhaps the harder part was that Amit who loved to write and kept a journal was so longer able to do that as he also lost the hand with which he used to write.

Found few job opportunities after disability

After a long time, Amit finally pulled himself out of his state of depression and resolved to get his life back. Amazon was the first company to make him a job offer. His physical condition made no difference to the organisation and this was a wonderful surprise to Amit as he had been rejected by other companies because of his disability.

At Amazon, Amit gets treated with respect by colleagues and he finds the work culture comfortable and exciting.
