Yoga training with focus on children with disabilities

Bengaluru based Prafull Oorja, a charitable foundation, is working to build greater awareness about the benefits of yoga. Yoga’s benefits are known to all, but they are especially helpful for children with disabilities.
Based in Bengaluru, Prafull Oorja is spreading awareness about the benefits of yoga through awareness programs, training classes and workshops. To make sure that yoga is not confined to an urban audience, Prafull Oorja reaches out to women and youth in rural areas as well.
This month, from 26 to 28 July , Prafull Oorja is organising a training session for yoga teachers with a focus on children with disabilities. The trainees will be taught techniques that can be used as therapy for children with disabilities and disorders.
Yoga sessions for special needs children is unique, because it’s a form of therapy. A child with special needs may go for occupational and speech therapies or other classes; Like that, yoga also offers a version of therapy. At Prafull Oorja, we use philosophies and practices of yoga to fit the needs of the children in the classes in that moment. We also strive towards sustainability. Our sangha tries not to miss classes once they start and we have a substitute system in place for this purpose. – Sowmya Ayyar, Founder-Executive Director, Prafull Oorja
Yoga is known to build mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing among those who do it regularly. Many people swear by the healing effects of yoga. The training session is from 26 to 28 July and will cover various topics.
“Yoga training will be to meet the needs of children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, learning conditions, and others”, says Roshni Rajan. “Training will also be given with consideration for yoga for cancer patients, children’s homes and low income children. Meditation, mudras, mantras, and dance will be part of the sessions. The aim is to benefit special needs children”.
